Artist SunTek Chung constructs and then photographs elaborate environments in which he inserts himself playing a variety of roles. Chung conflates the signifiers of many cultures, often examining his own identity and background, while illustrating the complexity and diversity of a global society. In the photograph Kung Fu Cricket (2002), Chung plays the dual role of a cricket player complete with sweater and mallet, and Kung Fu master ready to strike standing in front of a traditional Pagoda altar. In an earlier video performance 925 from 2000, Chung utilizes a downtown intersection to run sprints as if competing in a race drawing attention from the surrounding pedestrians. Chung creates a tension between the role of the athlete and the everyday urban environment in which the performance takes place. In Chung's work, through humor and pop references, different worlds collide: east and west, high and low, and colonial and indigenous.
