British Artist Julie Henry is a dedicated football (soccer) fan, and her work often reflects an interest in related subjects. In her recent series Dyed in the Wool, Henry commissioned fans of Premiership Football (soccer) clubs in England to design and knit cardigan sweaters representing their favorite club. In contrast to the ready-made jerseys commonly found in athletic stores today, these designs reflect the look and tradition of 1970s homemade cardigans. Back then, it was common for fans to knit their own apparel and improvise unique patterns‹a highly personal level of expression with the shared effect of being unified by the same color. In this series, fans act as designers creating the image and styling of the sweater. Henry's sincere affection for the game of football is somewhat at odds with the extreme commercialism of the sports industry today. Her work reaffirms the core values of being a fan while eschewing the role of consumer.
